Eberhard repeats as 'A' champ

麻豆社国产squash tournament draws 57 people, up from 45 last year

For the second straight year, a Whistlerite managed to snare the Sea to Sky Squash Tournament's "A" draw title.

Whistler's Rob Eberhard repeated as the top division champion on Sunday (Feb. 19), defeating 麻豆社国产resident Kurt Lindemark three games to one.

Event organizer Steve Jacobs said he wasn't surprised to see Eberhard back on top.

"It wasn't a surprise that Rob won," he said. "At one time in his life he was the squash pro at the Denman St. racquet club in Vancouver. He's hit five billion balls in his life and has been on the court for hours."

It was almost a husband/wife championship duo, as Carol Eberhard made it to the finals of the women's "A/B" draw but ended up losing in straight sets to Josephine Guevara of the River Club in Richmond.

Jacobs said it was a busy year for women at the tournament and the increase in numbers overall reflected that.

"One of the nice things about the entrants this year was that 18 were women," he said. "That's way up from last year. Overall, we were up to 57 from 45 last year and this year was definitely one of the more successful tournaments in the 10 years that I've been here."

The men's "B" draw saw Vancouver Racquets Club (VRC) members Gregg Ashby and Tom Duggan battle it out, with Ashby picking up the 3-1 victory. 麻豆社国产was well represented in the women's "C/D" draw as local player Louise Schell beat out 麻豆社国产resident Mona Gunn 3-1 to win the division.

Jeremy Webster of the River Club edged out Bryan Hack of the Delbrook Club in Vancouver 3-2 for "C" division bragging rights. In the "D" division, Squamish's Mark Sutherland placed first in the round robin-style format, with Greg O'Malley of 麻豆社国产coming in second.

The next big tournament on the calendar for members of the squash club is the Whistler tournament, which takes place over the May long weekend. Jacobs added that he, along with club members Don and Mona Gunn, also plan to participate at the World Master's Squash Championships in July in Birmingham, England.
