School T&F qualifiers

Several Don Ross Middle School and Howe Sound Secondary students qualified for the B.C. high school track and field championships in early June.Ìý

More than 3,000 students from all over the province competed for three days in Nanaimo.ÌýCoach Brandi Heisterman congratulated the athletes who qualified: Ryan Blasak, high jump and hurdles; Ali Hughes-Goyette, 800m; Andy Kite, 100m; Tucker Reed, triple jump and high jump; Carey Yeh, triple jump; Hayden McLellan 100m, 200m and long jump; Graeme Bowers, 800m; and Alex Fujimara, 100m and 200m. Triathletes race in OliverÌý

At the Oliver triathlon the first weekend of June, a handful of Â鶹Éç¹ú²úracers took part. Martin Caron had two big wins back to back, taking the sprint distance on the Saturday and the 70.3 event.

Jen Segger finished second overall among females in the 70.3 at her first triathlon since 2011. Zoe Dawson finished in fifth for females.ÌýAs well, Natasha Wrenshall completed her first-ever triathlon at the 70.3 in temperatures that hit 42C, while Jodi Westbury also had a strong race.Ìý

Horse champions

Squamish’s Team SureFyre with coach Jinny Antilla competed this past weekend in Maple Ridge. Shea Labrenz with his horse Black Jack won Champion for the three-day weekend in the .85m jumper Jr./Am division. Gabrielle Labrenz and her horse Celtic Fyre won reserve champion for the show in the 1M Division.Ìý

In the hunter ring (a judged Equisport) Hannah Askew and her horse Hot Chocolate received the high point award, Hannah Levine with TNT achieved four second-place rounds, Emma Levine with horse TNT grabbed a second, third, fourth and fifth, while Olivia Thomas with her horse Phantom of the Opera achieved a first, second and four thirds in her rounds.Ìý

SORCA hits goal

The Â鶹Éç¹ú²úOff-Road Cycling Association announced it has hit its fundraising goal for the Diamond Head trail project, which now stands at 104 per cent of the target.

More than 520 sponsors and individuals helped contribute to the project, which is currently being built. SORCA plans to hold a party to celebrate on the afternoon of June 26. For more info, see www.sorca.ca.

Carter places second

Squamish’s Eric Carter took second in Saturday’s Comfortably Numb trail race in Whistler, finishing with a time of 2:01:16.Ìý

Two other locals landed in the top 10. David Roulston was seventh at 2:12:16 and Garibaldi Highlands’ Brendan Urlocker was eighth with a time of 2:17:30.

At more than 23 kilometres, Comfortably Numb’s course is an internationally recognized mountain biking route and also used for the run.Ìý

Canada Cup cross-country

Sean Fincham rode his mountain bike into second place in the junior men category on Sunday at the Hardwood Hills Canada Cup in Oro Station, Ont.

Other Team Â鶹Éç¹ú²úriders had a tougher day, as Rhys Verner came 16th in the pro elite category. Holden Jones posted a 7th but was fighting a cough, and Hunter Verner finished 18th. Nick Kleban was sick and did not finish his race.
