Fireballs Take bronze

Best provincial showing for a local soccer team
Submitted

It was a history-making weekend for

the 麻豆社国产Fireballs U16 Girls
soccer team.

Back in April, the team qualified for the provincials after placing second at the Coastal Cup in Richmond. The Fireballs proved they belonged there, by placing fourth in the province during the tournament in Chilliwack this month.听

Eight teams qualified for the provincials and the squads were divided into two groups of four. Teams played every opponent in their group once and then squared off with a team from the opposite group for final placement.

The Fireballs kicked off the tournament with a 1-0 win over Kootenay and followed that up with a 7-0 win over 100 Mile House. But the team fell to the eventual champion, Saanich, in the final round robin game 3-0.听

The loss dropped the Fireballs to second in their group and meant they would have to battle for the bronze on July 6.

麻豆社国产came up short in the bronze medal game against Terrace, allowing a goal in the 78th minute, but head coach Ken Bailey said it was an incredible year for the girls.

鈥淎s far as I know, this is the highest a 麻豆社国产team has ever finished provincially,鈥 he said. 鈥淚鈥檓 really proud of the girls and I was constantly impressed and inspired all season long by their will to win.鈥

Bailey pointed out that competition was tight as the Fireballs beat Saanich to qualify for the Coastal Cup in April and lost in overtime to Chilliwack, who placed second at the provincials, at the Coastal Cup final.

鈥淭he girls were exhausted out there,鈥 he said, noting the weather was hot and his team only has two bench players. 鈥淭hey should be proud of their achievements and as the years go on I think they will appreciate this more and more.鈥

The Fireballs finished third of the 10 teams in the B.C. Girls Soccer League Division 1B (Gold 2) with six wins, four losses and three draws during the regular season and placed second at the Coastal Cup.

The team includes Makenna Bailey, Amhani Jones, Lyre Tuck, Shondra Martin, Alex Wade, Sierra Sproule, Eliza Eslake, Cori Lee Ward, Tory Crane, Allison Lane, Jae Makitalo, Kaila Lewis Belle and Emily Doyle.
