The first big tournament in the history of the Garibaldi Springs disc golf course was on Saturday (April 18) with the Spring Fling event.
Approximately 50 participants from all over the Sea to Sky Corridor and Metro Vancouver descended on the brand new 18-hole course, which is now open to the public.Â
Players were divided into pro and amateur divisions, with pro disc golfers receiving money and amateurs earning special prizes. A handful of local players competed at the event, but the only Â鶹Éç¹ú²úresident to win was Michelle Kruger, who placed first in intermediate women. Squamish’s Erik Wendland finished second for intermediate men and Squamish’s Briana Ainsley placed third in the pro women division.
Other division winners at the event included: Tsawwassen’s Dave Brown (pro men), Vancouver’s Gerry Gauthier (advanced men), Vancouver’s Leanne Fulton (pro women), Vancouver’s Adriano Reche Medola (intermediate men), Victoria’s Tara Lynch (advanced women) and Vancouver’s Mai Ken (novice women).
The course is now completely open to the public and discs are available for sale or rental. The next big event on the calendar for the course occurs on June 19 when the 2015 Canadian Disc Golf Championships comes to town. The event features the best disc golfers in the country and province, and is one of five legs in the championship event.
Course officials hope to host at least one big tournament per month at Garibaldi Springs and note that the course is still open for traditional golf and foot golf.
