The Squamish-based Callaghan Winter Sports Club is planning a grand opening of its inaugural ski jumping program, known as "Flight School," this weekend at Whistler Olympic Park (WOP).
The program, which has its grand opening on Sunday (Jan. 30) from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., is being led by John Heilig, manager of Nordic sport for Whistler Olympic Park. Heilig was a member of the Canadian Nordic combined team from 1982 to '87 and Canadian ski jumping coach from 1985 to 1995. He will lead the sessions at the base of the 2010 Olympic ski jumping facility at WOP.
In a statement, CWSC officials described ski jumping as "the ultimate sport for thrill seekers." Anyone 10 or older can learn, they said.
"The feeling of flight while ski jumping is like no other sport experience," Heilig said.
Four, two-hour sessions are planned. Future sessions are planned on Feb. 6 and 20 and March 6. For more information, visit www.callaghanwintersportsclub.com or contact Jeannine Bradshaw at (604) 815-7575.
