Fondo FanZone returns

Third annual event offers highlights for locals
Photo by Ben Lypka/The squamish Chief Fans lined the highway in the Estates to cheer on riders during the 2013 GranFondo event.

Make sure to bring your maple syrup to the Garibaldi Village Mall on Saturday (Sept. 6).

The third annual GranFondo Fan Zone and Marketplace is bigger and better for 2014 and this year includes free waffles courtesy of Ricky’s Restaurant.

But breakfast food isn’t the only feature, as there will be over 25 vendors and activities for the whole family to enjoy
as thousands of bikes zoom
through Squamish.

A live performance from Â鶹Éç¹ú²úfiddler Jocelyn Pettit highlights the Fan Zone and there will also be Vitamix demonstrations, kids crafts with face painting and coffee for the parents.

Kids will get a chance to hit the roads with Pedalheads, who are hosting kids bike obstacle course races all morning long. Children aged two and three hit the course at 9:45 a.m., four- to six-year-olds at 10 a.m. and six to eight year olds at 10:15 a.m. All races are free.

The newly branded Corsa Sprint will give Â鶹Éç¹ú²úresidents the chance to see cyclists give it their all during a 500 metre section of Highway 99. Timing mats will be set up in front of Garibaldi Village Mall and the fastest female and male rider through the distance wins a $500 gift certificate to Corsa Cycles.

The Fan Zone also marks the start of the annual Medio race, which sees competitors ride the 55 kilometres to Whistler. The ride kicks off at 9:30 a.m. and usually attracts cyclists of all skill levels.

As in previous years, GranFondo organizers encourage everyone to check out Saturday’s other big event – the Brackendale Fall Fair, once the cyclists have made their way through Squamish.
