A disappointing weekend of soccer at Quest University saw both the men's and women's teams lose all four of their games and manage only to score one goal between them.
It seemed to be a step backward for both teams after some success in the past few weeks.
Chelsey Forsberg scored the school's only goal, which occurred during the women's game Sunday (Oct. 3) against the Capilano University Blues.
The team dropped that game 2-1 and coach Martina Franko was not pleased with how it transpired.
"We just weren't playing our game out there," she said. "We looked unmotivated and tired and not our usual creative and organized club out there."
The Blues had a 1-0 lead after the first half and then scored an early second half goal to put a stranglehold on the play.
Forsberg scored the lone goal after a nice set-up but it wasn't enough. It was the first win on the season for Capilano and it left a bitter taste in the coaching staff's mouth, who had targeted the Blues as a winnable game.
"We had too many people walking out there and not running," Franko added. "We need complete motivation and better mental preparation for our next game."
Franko did say that the team played a good game against a strong Langara team, creating a lot of chances but losing 1-0 on Saturday (Oct. 2).
The men's side also had a rough day on Sunday (Oct. 3), losing to Capilano 4-0.
The first half saw the teams play to a 0-0 draw, but the game fell apart for the Kermodes in the second half, which saw them concede four unanswered goals.
"We were overall happy with the first half," said acting head coach Chris Cerroni. "But the first two goals they scored stunned us and it changed the game."
Capilano opened the scoring on a penalty kick and then quickly scored another after a strange deflection. The two quick second half goals seemed to deflate Quest.
A defensive breakdown led to the third goal and the Blues added insult to injury by scoring a late one-off header to reach the final score of 4-0.
Of particular concern Quest were the dozen or more set play opportunities that they failed to convert.
Head coach Adam Day was not present on the sidelines after receiving a suspension for a dispute with an official in the team's 1-0 loss against Langara on Saturday (Oct. 2). He is expected to return to the bench next game.
The two losses dropped the men's team to fourth place in Group B, with a new record of two wins and four losses.
Next up for both teams will be home games against the Douglas College Royals and the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Eagles on Saturday (Oct. 9) and Sunday (Oct. 10) respectively.
The women's team hosts the Royals at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 9) with the men's team playing at 3 p.m.
The games on Sunday (Oct. 10) will see the women's team hit the pitch at noon and the men's team is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
