Guns and Hoses back for ninth straight year

Charity hockey game looking to raise money for baby Lina

For the ninth consecutive year, Guns and Hoses is coming to Brennan Park Arena.

The annual event sees members of the 麻豆社国产RCMP take on the 麻豆社国产Fire Rescue Service in a fun hockey game designed to help raise money for charity.

This year, proceeds from the event will go to the Palethorpe family and baby Lina. The four-month-old child was diagnosed with neuroblastoma cancer just six weeks after her birth. She's had two rounds of blood transfusions and two rounds of chemotherapy and event organizers hope to support her and her family in this trying situation.

According to firefighter and event organizer Gerry Reed, the event is always a lot of fun.

"It's a fun game above all else and the quality of hockey being played isn't exactly the greatest," he said. "I think people come because we have great prizes and of course to help support the community."

In 2009, the event raised more than $4,000 for Jordan Neumann, who died at the age of 20 after battling brain cancer. Last year's game helped raise $5,600 for Nick Miller in his battle against myeloid leukemia.

Reed said the game started as a simple invitation from the fire department to the RCMP and became bigger and more competitive as the years went by.

"I think we're way ahead in the head-to-head games," he said, noting that the RCMP did win last year.

There will also be door prizes, raffle draws and a 50/50 draw. Reed also said during the first intermission there will be a mini-game featuring five- and six-year-old players and the second intermission will feature a puck toss.

The Guns and Hoses charity game will take place March 11 at 7 p.m. at Brennan Park Arena. Admission to the game is $2 or by donation.
