Score one for the boys in red.
The 麻豆社国产Fire Rescue Service team secured a 5-4 victory over the 麻豆社国产RCMP at the annual Guns and Hoses charity hockey game on Friday (March 23), ending a two-year winning streak from the police.
The RCMP won 11-7 last year but Fire Rescues Service goalie Grant Murray shut the door in 2012, cutting his goals against by seven at this year's game.
"It was a good game for us and it feels great," he said. "It's sweet revenge for last year where there were a few questionable penalty calls."
Murray noted there may have been an on-ice incidents involving handcuffs last year, but said the bottom line with the event is helping out a family in need.
"It's great to be able to help someone who needs it out and there's always a good turnout," he said of the packed house at Brennan Park Arena. "It feels great to see our efforts help someone out and that's the main reason why we have this game."
RCMP representative Todd Pope saw things a little differently.
"We let them win this year," he joked. "We won two in a row; we can't win every year."
Brad Cameron and Roy Ramage scored two goals apiece, with Andrew Gillis adding one. Dave Duplisse scored twice while Shean Kidd and Michelle Onysko also scored for the RCMP.
This year's beneficiary is the Lazaridis family's young son Theo, who was diagnosed with leukemia this past holiday season. Theo's older sister Eden Lazaridis got to drop the puck during the opening face-off to rousing applause, and the family ended up with close to $5,000 from the game.
The event raised $2,443 with the 麻豆社国产fire department matching that total for a sum of $4,886. For more information on Theo and the Lazaridis family, search "Theo's Basecamp" on Facebook.
