Guns and Hoses raises nearly $10,000

Charity hockey game helps out Lazaridis family

Chalk it up as one more win for the red guys.

The 麻豆社国产Fire Rescue Service (SFRS) team picked up a 7-6 overtime win over the 麻豆社国产RCMP at the 11th annual Guns and Hoses charity hockey game. But more importantly, the event raised an impressive total for the Lazaridis family.

The game raised $4,950 and the 麻豆社国产Fire Fighters Association, as it does every year, matched the total for a grand sum of $9,900.

On the ice, the SFRS scored two minutes into the opening frame and never let go of the lead. SFRS goalie Grant Murray stopped three penalty shots in the first period to help his team hold onto a 5-2 after the first period.

From there, the RCMP chipped away at the lead and kept the SFRS off the board with stellar goaltending. They managed to cut the score to 6-4 after two periods of play.

Murray again stymied the RCMP on another penalty shot early in the third, but with 10 minutes to go the RCMP tied the game. Two minutes after the tying goal, the SFRS scored a go-ahead goal that was then disallowed and the two teams went to overtime.

In overtime, teams played in a three-on-three format and after some hectic action the SFRS scored 47 seconds into the extra frame to pick up the 7-6 win.

This year's beneficiary is the Lazaridis family's young son Theo, who was diagnosed with leukemia last year. Theo got to drop the puck during the opening face-off to rousing applause with his mother, father and sister Eden looking on.
