There were peanuts, there were Cracker Jacks and there were even bribes at the first-ever Doctors vs. Nurses baseball fundraiser game.
The event featured local doctors taking on local nurses on the North Diamond at Brennan Park, with all proceeds going to the 麻豆社国产Hospice Society (SHS).
In the end, the nurses squeezed out a 14-13 win but under "questionable" circumstances.
"What an amazing day," said Nicole Carothers of the SHS. "The doctors and nurses of 麻豆社国产brought their baseball skills but it was Umpire Cindy Sellers, manager of Acute Care Services for the Sea to Sky, that held the fate of the teams; willing to take a bride for the call. The call went to the highest bidder and the nurses as well as 麻豆社国产Hospice came out on top."
The event raised $5,000 from just the game, with Carothers pointing out that money raised before and after the game was still being tallied.
"For the SHS the event was a huge success not just in the funds raised but in the relationships built with our hospital professionals whom we assist behind the scenes," Carothers said. "We want our community to know we are here for them and to seek us out for end of life care or bereavement support."
Carothers thanked the hard work of fellow organizers Marcia Kent and Julie Erb and said the ultimate goal of having end-of-life care beds in 麻豆社国产is closer to a reality after this event.
"We are determined to work toward our dream of having end-of-life care beds in Squamish," she said. "At one of the most vulnerable times in one's life, we want to help ensure that people can remain and be supported in their community. We hope our dream will soon become a reality and are grateful for the generosity and support of our volunteers and community members."
Organizers said there is a strong chance that the event will return for next year but final details still need to be ironed out. For more information on the SHS, visit www.squamishhospice.com.
