Hockey players back on the ice

Â鶹Éç¹ú²úlocals of all shapes and sizes hitting the frozen pond

Hockey season is fast approaching and Â鶹Éç¹ú²úlocals are set to hit the ice both professionally and on junior teams throughout North America.

Montreal Canadiens prospect Dalton Thrower was invited to the Habs rookie camp, but an ankle injury ruled him out of participating. The Â鶹Éç¹ú²úMinor Hockey Association (SMHA) product will be out about a month with the injury, but is expected to suit up for Montreal’s farm team, the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League, this season.

Back in May, Dalton signed a three-year, entry-level contract with Montreal.

Dalton’s brother Josh Thrower received an invite by the Vancouver Canucks to prospects camp in Penticton earlier this month. He suited up for the Canucks in one game at the tournament, but was then released by the club at the end of the camp.

Josh has returned to his Western Hockey League club, the Tri-City Americans, who kicked off their season on Sept. 20.

Over in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), Jarid Lukosevicius is back with the Powell River Kings and has two goals in the Kings’s first two games. It will be the final year in the BCHL for Lukosevicius, who has committed to playing for the University of Denver in the NCAA for 2015-16.

SMHA product Malik Kaila is also back in the BCHL for his second year with the Merritt Centennials. According to team officials, Kaila has put on a lot of size over the summer and now weighs over 200 pounds. He’s expected to be an important part of Merritt’s defensive core.

Meanwhile, after a year in Alberta, Squamish’s Brodyn Nielsen has returned to the North Vancouver Wolf Pack of the Pacific Junior Hockey League (PJHL). Nielsen was named the captain of the team and has recorded four points in the team’s first four games. Nielsen is also the last active player on the Wolf Pack roster who suited up for the team when they played in Â鶹Éç¹ú²úbefore leaving for North Vancouver in 2011.

Also returning to Junior B action is Squamish’s Bret Higham, who returns to the Comox Valley Glacier Kings of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL). Higham has recorded 12 penalty minutes in three games so far in VIJHL action.

In local news, the SMHA is offering several development camps for players of all levels. For more details on the camps, visit www.squamishminorhockey.com.

The SMHA is also running officials clinics for all new and experienced referees. The clinics occur at Brennan Park on Oct. 5. For more information on the officials clinic, visit www.squamishminorhockey.com/news.php?news_id=992539.
