Cannons win championship
Game one of the best-of-three series started Thursday, Aug. 4 between the Howe Sound Cannons and the North Shore Bulls, with the Cannons jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The runs came off a Justin Lawrence three-run home run deep into the leftfield bleachers.Ìý
The Cannons would add two more in the second inning on a Jeremy Galley two-run double. Sean Calligari would add two more in the third with a double of his own, allowing Howe Sound to take the game comfortably 12-1.
Galley racked up the win, giving up three hits while striking out seven.
Game two on Saturday afternoon featured a pair of former UBC Thunderbirds facing off in a pitching duel, with the Cannons Calligari going the distance for a complete game on one hit while striking out 13. The Bulls’ Alex Graham matched him pitch for pitch most of the afternoon.Ìý
The only run of the thriller came in the bottom of the seventh when Justin Lawrence led off the inning with a walk. He then stole second and was moved to third by Kurtis Malm. He would score the walk-off 1-0 win for the Cannons when a curveball in the dirt got away from the catcher.
