A pair of young Â鶹Éç¹ú²újiu jitsu competitors showed their stuff at the Roots Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Challenge in Richmond on Saturday (Aug. 8).
Gracie Barra Â鶹Éç¹ú²úathletes Hayden Jupista and Mariza Nasu each took home medals battling against the best in their age category in Metro Vancouver.
Jupista won his third straight tournament gold, beating both the opponents he faced in less than two minutes by armbar submission. The Grade 2 Garibaldi Highlands Elementary student remains undefeated in the three tournaments in which he has competed this year.
Nasu earned silver to go along with two golds she won earlier this year. The Grade 1 Garibaldi Highlands Elementary student recorded three wins and one loss on Saturday, dropping the gold medal match by referee’s decision. Her defence remains airtight in tournament competition; she had not allowed a single point in her past 10 fights and three tournaments prior.
GB Â鶹Éç¹ú²úas a team placed third overall in the kids’ division on Saturday. The children are taking it easy for the rest of the summer and will return to tournament action in the fall.
Head coach Cole Manson and assistant coach Mike Nasu head to the IBJJF World Masters Tournament in Las Vegas in September before the club opens its new school in Squamish.
