Kermodes perfect on the road

Quest men, women sweep four games over the weekend

It鈥檚 been almost one full calendar year since the Quest Kermodes women鈥檚 basketball team has gone down in defeat in Pacwest regular season action.

Quest hasn鈥檛 tasted the sting of a loss since Feb. 8, 2014 and that trend continued after a pair of dominant wins on the road on Friday (Jan. 16) and Saturday (Jan. 17).

The Kermodes opened up an eight-point lead after the first quarter against the Kwantlen Eagles, en route to a 78-55 win in Surrey on Friday.

Quest shot a sizzling 46.5 per cent from the field, and balanced scoring was again the story. The Kermodes had double-digit outputs from Shayna Cameron (13), Emily Frame (12), Aimee Johnston (11) and Kimmy Aburegeba (11). Katrin Sandbichler added a team high 10 rebounds and two steals in the win.

The Kermodes held the Eagles to just 30 per cent shooting and outscored Kwantlen鈥檚 bench 35-7.

Quest鈥檚 momentum continued on Saturday against the CBC Bearcats in Abbotsford, where they posted a 72-53 win.

Cameron led the way with 23 points but guard Abbey Piazza (nine points, five assists and five steals) and forward Miriam Baumann (nine points, nine rebounds, nine assists and four steals) also had big games.

The pair of wins improved Quest to a perfect record of 10 wins and zero losses on the season.

The men鈥檚 team kept pace with the women, also posting a pair of wins on Friday and Saturday.

Quest鈥檚 Dallas Searles had a monster game against the Eagles, scoring 22 points and adding nine rebounds in the Kermodes 87-59 win. The Kermodes also got big nights from Theo VandenEkart (17 points, eight assists and four rebounds) and Connor Heinrichs (13 points and six rebounds).

The Kermodes dominated in the first quarter, outscoring the Eagles 19-6 to cruise to the win.

It was a lot more challenging for Quest on Saturday against the Bearcats, as Mike Zayas-Duran made a pair of clutch free throws in the game鈥檚 final seconds to win 71-69.

Guard Dylan Kular led the way with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists and three other Kermodes reached double figures. Noah DeRappard-Yuswack had a team high seven rebounds to go along with 12 points.

The Kermodes picked up the win despite shooting only 39 per cent from the field. However, they beat the Bearcats on the boards by outrebounding CBC 43-25. Also impressive was the fact that Quest trailed by 20 points early in the second half of the game only to come back.

The teams hit the road again on Friday (Jan. 23) and Saturday (Jan. 24) when they travel to Vancouver Island. Quest takes on VIU on Friday and Camosun on Saturday.

They return home for the first time in 2015 on Jan. 30, when the Langara Falcons come to town.
