The Quest University Kermodes men's and women's basketball teams established new team records in wins during Pacwest action this past weekend, with the playoffs looming.
The women's team set a new record for wins on Thursday (Jan. 31) with a dominant 87-55 win over the Columbia Bible College (CBC) Bearcats. It was the 10th win of the season for Quest, breaking last year's mark of nine wins.
The victory also clinched a playoff berth for the Kermodes, as the women will head to the postseason for the second straight year. The joy ended just two days later for Quest after a trip to Surrey and an 83-79 loss to the Kwantlen Eagles. The women now have a record of 10 wins and seven losses and sit in fourth place in the Pacwest. The Kermodes can finish anywhere from second to sixth and the final two weeks will determine tournament seeding.
It was the opposite for the men's team, who lost 97-78 to CBC on Thursday but then bounced back with a 102-87 win over Kwantlen on Saturday (Feb. 2). The Kermodes came back from a nine-point deficit in the third and outscored the Eagles 38-14 in the final quarter to pick up the win.
The win against Kwantlen for the men set a new win total record for the school with eight. The previous record for the team was six wins set in 2010-'11 and 2009-'10.
The men's team is in control of its destiny as far as the playoffs go, as the Kermodes sit in third place in the Pacwest with a record of eight wins and nine losses. There are four games left in the season but only two wins separates third from seventh.
Quest will back in the Kermode Kave on Friday (Feb. 8) when VIU comes to town. The women tip off at 6 p.m. and the men get underway at 8 p.m. The school will then honour its graduating players on Saturday (Feb. 9) at Seniors' Day when Camosun comes to Squamish. The women hit the court at 1 p.m., with the men tipping off at 3 p.m.
