The Quest Kermodes men's and women's basketball teams struggles away from the friendly confines of the Kermode Kave continued last weekend as the teams split a pair of games on the road.
The men's team kicked off the weekend with a date against the Columbia Bible College (CBC) Bearcats on Friday (Jan. 11) and hung on for the 67-63 win. The Kermodes opened up an 11-point lead in the first half, but CBC kept it relatively close.
Playing in his second game in the Pacwest, Cartiea French-Toney led Quest with 15 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Sunny Johal led the way on the boards, grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds in the win.
The victory marked the Kermodes' first win on the road this season and the squad remained stuck at one victory after dropping a 103-83 decision to the Kwantlen Eagles on Saturday (Jan. 12). The Eagles' 103 points are the most scored against Quest this season.
It was a similar story for the women's team, as they defeated CBC 73-39 on Friday and then fell 78-65 to Kwantlen on Saturday.
The Kermodes were dominant on Friday, as they allowed only 11 points against in the first half and built a 24-point lead. Quest never trailed in the game and were led by Shayna Cameron, who had 16 points and seven rebounds. Katrin Sandbichler also had a strong game, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
Quest then ran into a hot-shooting Eagles team on Saturday, as Kwantlen shot 47.5 per cent from the field and outscored the Kermodes 25-8 in the game's final quarter. Quest had four players in double-digit scoring, but it wasn't enough.
Both teams' road records fell to one win and four losses on the year, nearly opposite to their records of five wins and one loss at home. After the weekend, the men's and women's teams sit in third place in the Pacwest conference.
The teams will hit the road again this weekend with games against Vancouver Island University (VIU) on Friday (Jan. 18) and Camosun College on Saturday (Jan. 19).
