The Quest men's and women's basketball teams had one thing on their minds when they left for Vancouver Island this past weekend: sweep.
But they left with identical and unsatisfying results: splits.
On Friday (Feb. 7), the women were able to exact revenge on the Camosun Chargers with a 64-50 victory. The Chargers handed the Kermodes two early-season losses, so the win left the Kermodes feeling optimistic as the playoffs approach.
"We definitely needed this win heading into the playoffs. It shows that we're peaking at the right time of the season," said Quest's Katrin Sandbichler.
Sandbichler was a steady presence against the Chargers as she finished with nine points, six rebounds and seven steals. Shayna Cameron led the Kermodes with 18 points on seven-of-10 shooting from the field, with Miriam Baumann adding 10 points and five rebounds.
On Saturday night (Feb.8), the Kermodes couldn't quite duplicate the same effort as they fell to the Vancouver Island Mariners (VIU) 70-58.
The Kermodes struggled to maintain their offensive efficiency from the previous night, as they shot below 40 per cent from the field and committed 39 turnovers.
The aforementioned Cameron and Andrea Eidsvik led the way with 12 points apiece. But ultimately Eidsvik thinks that the teams' loss might stem from a deeper cause than simply their offensive woes.
"VIU is so sure in what they're doing and that translates into how they play. I don't think that, as a team, we collectively had the belief that we would beat VIU," she said. "Players were tense. We didn't start playing freely until the game was out of our hands. We're new to winning and we don't have complete confidence in ourselves just yet."
The men experienced a similar fate on both nights. On Friday night, the men defeated the Chargers 84-72. Cartiea French-Toney led the way with a big game of 27 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The men also fell short against the Mariners on Saturday, falling 83-64.
The men experienced a bad shooting night as they shot 22 for 76 from the field, including three-of-22 from beyond the three-point arc.
Cartiea French-Toney once again led the way for the Kermodes as he notched 24 points and four steals.
Both teams sit in third place of the Pacwest with three regular season games remaining.
Both teams travel back to 麻豆社国产as they host the Kwantlen Eagles on Friday (Feb. 14) and Columbia Bible College on Saturday (Feb. 15).
