Kermodes women shut out at home

Team fails to score goals in back to back games and are struggling to find offence

After a promising end to last month, the Quest Kermodes women's soccer team has only managed to score one goal in their last four games, falling to fourth place in their division.

The lack of offence continued on Saturday (Oct. 9) and Sunday (Oct. 10), as they played to a 0-0 draw against Douglas College and lost 1-0 to Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

An unusual shot managed to beat Quest goalkeeper Tiana Gilchrist late in the first half on Sunday (Oct. 10) and it proved to be the difference-maker.

The shot, which appeared to be a fairly harmless boot from mid-range, surprised the keeper, who has made several key saves to keep the game close.

"I was out of position," Gilchrist said. "It's really disappointing. Either the ball curved or bounced weirdly and I just wasn't ready for it."

Head coach Martina Franko was pleased with the girls' overall effort against Kwantlen, a strong group currently in second place in the Group A standings.

"I thought we really dominated them in the first half," Franko said. "But it was a really unfortunate goal that we gave up."

However, according to Franco, it was the inept offence that ultimately cost the team the game.

"We just didn't capitalize on our chances and that was the difference today," she said.

Franco also said that the scoreless draw against Douglas College on Saturday (Oct. 9) was a missed opportunity for the team.

"That was a game that we should have won," she said. "We again had a lot of chances but just couldn't get on the board."

The weekend of action sees the Quest's record fall to one win, five losses and two draws on the season. The Kermodes currently sit two points back of third place Capilano University and if Quest wants to make the playoffs, they must move ahead of their cross-town rivals.

The team will next host the top ranked Vancouver Island University Mariners on Saturday (Oct. 16) at 1 p.m.

It could potentially be a must-win game for the Quest as they edge towards the conclusion of league play on Sunday, Oct. 24.
