Khalsa kicks season off with a win

Week one of HSMSL action sees 5-1 victory over Zephyr

It was exactly the start that Zephyr's Peter Cox had hoped for.

Cox and his team Zephyr took on Khalsa in the first week of action in the Howe Sound Men's Soccer League, at Brennan Park Sunday (Sept. 12).

Zephyr opened the scoring but Khalsa replied with five unanswered goals and dominated the play after falling behind early. Zephyr had difficulty putting together the type of crisp passing plays that Khalsa displayed but Cox wasn't too worried at the end of the game.

"It wasn't a bad game for us," he said. "This is a new team and for a lot of the guys it was their first time out there. We just need to practice as a team more and we should be fine."

Chris Golaiy tallied the lone goal for Zephyr and Cox also praised the work of his goalkeeper, who faced a number of shots and kept the score relatively close.

Khalsa was pleased with the end result but realized that if they want to be a top team in the league, they must play better.

"I thought we played pretty good," said Khalsa head coach Chamkaur Dhaliwal, noting that he was impressed by the play of his younger players. "But I thought we made too many mistakes. For next time we need to work on our passing and quickness"

Dhaliwal expressed his dissatisfaction when he addressed the team shortly after the game.

"We started off really poor," he said. "We need more passing and better team work next week."

Dhaliwal also told his team to work on their shooting accuracy as he pointed out that the team squandered a number of opportunities.

The team also agreed that if they play against a more experienced team the same way they played against Zephyr that they would be lucky to get a tie.

Scoring for Khalsa were Jag Sangha, Jared Bir, Adam Bir, Ranjit Cheema and Chris Johnstone.

In other HSMSL action from Sunday (Sept. 12), Galileo crushed Lilwat7uhl 9-0. Notable scorers were Cristian Oreamuno who had a hat trick, Adrian Oreamuno who potted two goals.

The noon game saw defending champion Ellis Moving draw Dyer Straights 0-0 in a game that league president Jose Oreamuno called "the best game of the week."

Next weeks games will see Zephyr take on Dyer Straights and Khalsa tangle with Galileo at 10 a.m. The noon game will see Howe Sound Brewing FC take to the field for the first time this season to take on Ellis Moving.
