It was a bounce back week for Khalsa as the team regrouped after a 5-2 loss to Galileo last week to defeat the Dyer Straits 3-0 during week three action in the Howe Sound Men's Soccer League on Sunday (Sept. 26).
Khalsa's Richard Collins opened the scoring early, booting a short side goal past Dyer Straits keeper San Dunkley and the score remained 1-0 for the rest of the first half.
The second half saw Collins add a second goal on a penalty kick and Pardip Sangha scored a late goal to give Khalsa the 3-0 victory.
It was a completely different performance from a week earlier for Khalsa and head coach "Uncle" Jack Bir was pleased with his team's performance.
"I thought it was a lot better game for us this week," he said. "We were really spreading the ball out well and that was the difference in the game."
Bir said the team played more aggressive offensively with defenders overlapping to stretch the field and maintain more ball possession.
Defender Ninder Bir stepped onto the pitch from the bench for the first time and Jack Bir thought his experience from the back end helped out a great deal.
"To have the more senior guys like Ninder out there directing traffic and getting guys to move is a big help," he said of the coach turned player. "He helped us spread out and use the whole field, he played well."
Dyer Straits keeper San Dunkley gave Khalsa credit for a strong game.
"It was a tough game for us," he said. "Khalsa played really good and had a lot of possession time."
Dyer Straits was playing without a head coach but Dunkley said the team really missed a few absent defenders.
"We've played without a head coach before but we were definitely missing some key d-men today," he said. "I think we'll be all right, we just need to work hard and finish. We definitely had some chances to score today."
With the win, Khalsa moves to second place in the HSML with a record of two wins and one loss. The Dyer Straits fall to third, with one win, one loss and a draw.
In other HSMSL action, Galileo continued their strong play and are now the only undefeated team in the league after defeating the Ellis Moving Eagles 6-1.
Galileo have now outscored their opponents 20-3 in their three games and by conquering the defending champion Eagles, have made themselves the early team to beat.
Kevin Schellenberg recorded a hat trick for the team, with singles coming from Cristian Oreamuno, Nico Lopez and Richard Moody.
Matt Rollinson scored the lone goal for the Eagles. Galileo now stands in first place in the HSMSL with three wins and zero losses while the Eagles move to one loss and one draw.
The day's other game saw Lilwat7uhl beat Zephyr 9-1. Matthew Dan and Kyle Smith scored a pair of goals each with five other players adding single goals. Ryan Quigley replied for Zephyr.
The win puts Lilwat7uhl at one win and one loss while Zephyr has yet to win with three losses.
