Kids rock at youth triathlon

More than 200 youngsters tackle 11th annual event

The 11th annual 麻豆社国产Youth Triathlon (SYT) was again a smash hit, attracting more than 200 of the best young athletes from across the region.

Race organizer Roz Gilbert said the event, which took place at Brennan Park on Sunday (May 8), went off quite smoothly.

"I think overall it went great," she said. "We had a few little hurdles but that happens every year. The weather co-operated and I think the kids all had a great time."

Gilbert said that the course adjustments, which included using the new Corridor Trail and the new set-up for the transition from swimming to biking, worked out well.

"In general I think they were pretty good," she said. "I just think for next year we'll need to mark the course, especially in the parking lot, a little better. But there were no incidents, so we can't really complain."

Gilbert noted that registration from Lower Mainland competitors was up this year, with many kids making the trek from Delta, Surrey and Langley. But the race also featured a lot of local talent faring well on their home turf.

Squamish's Autumn Cramb posted the top time in the female 12 to 13 division, completing the course in 52:11.3. Cramb beat out fellow 麻豆社国产racer Callista Ryan by just over 14 seconds to capture the win.

The male 10 to 11 division was dominated by local racers, who captured nine of the top 10 spots overall. Jack Cormack from Garibaldi Highlands won the group, with a time of 28:32.9, with Squamish's Stuart Loop and the Highlands' Ben Zuckernick not too far behind.

Squamish's Kasper Woolley also had a good morning, finishing tied for first place with Whistler's Nolan Welsh in the male 12 to 13 division. Nicolas Kleban from Garibaldi Highlands placed third in the division.

Josh Cormack placed first in the male 8 to 9 division, with a time of 22:49.1, beating out Nathan Bishop from Garibaldi Highlands and Whistler's Ben Brownlie. 麻豆社国产also dominated in the female 7 and under category, with Garibaldi Highlands' Elly Hoskin finishing first, followed by Squamish's Lynnette Conn and Garibaldi's Ava Kleban. Garibaldi's Keara Klimchuk-Brown also placed first in the female 14 to 15 division.

Out-of-towners did have some success, as proven by Bellingham's Jonatahon Wiley, who won the male 14 to 15 category with a time of 42:23.9. Vancouver's Ross Graham and Whistler's Tyler Welsh rounded out the groups top three. Other non-local winners included Langley's Sam Davison, who won the male 7 and under, Kaila Lafreniere of Whistler, who won female 8 to 9 and Jennifer Lafreniere of Whistler, who won female 10 to 11.

The team category saw a clean sweep for local teams with the Power Girls winning the 7 and under division, the Brackendale Tri-Athletes winning the 8 to 9 group, the Rockstars Back in Action winning 10 to 11, Team Alex-Jayson-Yamil win 12 to 13 and Team Sherlock win 14 to 15.

Despite the event being on Mother's Day, Gilbert said that the SYT remains a popular thing for families to do on mom's special day.

"I think it's a great thing to do on Mother's Day and we finish just in time for brunch," she said.
