Kids take turn in the spotlight

13th annual 麻豆社国产Youth Triathlon ready to go

It's time again for the youngsters of 麻豆社国产to show the community what they've got.

The 13th annual 麻豆社国产Youth Triathlon is ready to go on Sunday (May 12), with the first wave of participants hitting the pool at 8:50 a.m.

Last year was the first year for race director Mike Hedberg and a sold-out field of 230 youngsters swam, biked and ran their way to excellence.

Local kids had the opportunity to prepare themselves for the big day with training clinics offered throughout the month of April by the 麻豆社国产Pirates Swim Club, the 麻豆社国产Titans MultiSport Club and Brennan Park pool.

The course is largely the same as in past years, with two changes to the swimming portion of the race. Each age division is often made up of two or more different age groups and this year will be the first year to see the event kick off with kids placed in waves based on their age. For example, in the 12-13 division all the 12 year olds will be grouped together and start at a different time than the 13 year olds. The other new wrinkle to this year's race is a slightly changed swim pattern when racers start off the event in the Brennan Park pool.

The distance and divisions for the race remain unchanged. Kids are divided into six different categories, with distances for each discipline increasing with each age group. In each age group, there are categories for individual male, individual female and relay teams. Relay teams are two or three athletes, and can be male, female or mixed, but there is only one overall relay category in each age group. Relay team members must all be in the same age category.

As in previous years, community group tables will be set up at the finish line. Volunteers are still needed for the event and those willing to help out can do so by visiting www.squamishyouthtri.ca.
