Kleban, Verner hit podium

Cross-country mountain bikers Nick Kleban and Hunter Verner each hit the podium twice at recent events.Ìý

Several local riders took part at the Junkyard Dog BC Cup race in Surrey on April 24, with Kleban finishing second and Verner third.

The pair also finished second and third at this past weekend’s Sunshine Coaster event in the U19 category. Next on the schedule for the circuit is the local GearJammer race on Saturday (May 7), starting near Alice Lake and finishing near downtown Squamish.

Labrenz places secondÌý

Team SureFyre ‘s Shea Labrenz and his horse Black Jack came in second place in the pre-entry division for eventing on the weekend at the Maple Ridge May Horse Trails. Eventing is an equestrian event that combines scores across the three disciplines of dressage, show-jumping and cross-country.Ìý

Other local competitors included Ali Hedburg, who placed 11th in the entry division, and Gabrielle Labrenz, who placed ninth in the pre-training division.

Soccer for preschoolers

The District of Â鶹Éç¹ú²úis offering a preschool soccer program for children aged three to five starting this Saturday. The action-packed sports program is aimed at giving children an active start. Play, movement and sport-themed fun will help them develop movement skills. The program runs Saturdays at Brennan Park from May 7 to June 4 from 11:30 a.m. to noon. See squamish.ca.

Riders start Buckle Series

The Â鶹Éç¹ú²úEquestrian Gymkhana Club kicked off the first of five events in the 2016 Buckle Series on April 24 in Mt. Currie. The gymkhana events consist of timed games on horseback – including barrels, pole bending, stakes race, flag race and keyhole – and are open to all ages and abilities of the English and Western riders.Ìý

The next round takes place in Â鶹Éç¹ú²úon May 15 at the SVEA Grounds (beside the Loggers Sports Grounds). The Buckle Series also includes events in Mt. Currie on June 5, in Â鶹Éç¹ú²úon Aug. 20 and 21 and the finals in Mt. Currie on Sept. 18. Info on the eventÌý is available on its Facebook page.

Minor hockey AGM

Â鶹Éç¹ú²úMinor Hockey will hold its annual general meeting at Brennan Park Recreation Centre next Wednesday, May 11 starting at 6:30 p.m. Also, registration is open for returning players, while registration for new players begins June 1.

Kermode men add recruit

Ìý

Quest University continues to shore up its recruits for the fall, as the men’s soccer team has added a new player, Patricio Gonzalez, to provide defence for the team. The announcement was made April 28. Originally from Mexico City, Gonzalez moved to Toronto when he was 13. There he attended Toronto Waldorf School and played soccer for ANB Futbol.ÌýA career highlight was being called up to play for the League 1 Ontario inaugural season.
