Knight hired as DHO for SMHA

Knight looking forward to challenge, BCMML squads returning this fall

It might be the summertime but things are heating up on the ice for the 麻豆社国产Minor Hockey Association (SMHA).

The organization on Friday (July 26) announced that 麻豆社国产resident Tim Knight has been hired as the new director of hockey operations (DHO) for the 2013-'14 season. Knight has more than 19 years of experience as a coach, including a 15-year stint with Ridge Meadows minor hockey and two years as an assistant coach with the Vancouver NE Chiefs.

Knight has been involved with the SMHA as a coach and executive member since 2011 and was a head coach at last year's U16 B.C. Cup event. He also was awarded the Tim Ptucha award for outstanding contribution to coaching development and programs in the Lower Mainland in 2012.

"It's an honour to be selected as your director of hockey operations," Knight tweeted following the announcement. "Looking forward to the challenge."

Another big announcement from the SMHA is that Major Midget weekend is returning to 麻豆社国产in September.

Last year was the debut of the event, which sees several teams from the British Columbia Major Midget League (BCMML) come to town for a series of games before the start of the regular season.

Three squads made the trip last year and this year the tournament has doubled, with six teams participating. The Vancouver NE Chiefs, the Vancouver NW Giants and the North Island Silvertips are all returning from last year and they will be joined by the Greater Vancouver Canadians, the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds and the South Island Royals.

The tournament is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 13 to 15, with all games being played at Brennan Park Arena.

The SMHA also announced that Derek Cranfield will return as Atom Rep coach and Micheal Lindgren will be the Pee Wee Rep coach for 2013-'14. The Bantam and Juvenile divisions are still seeking head coaches, with hiring announcements to be made in the coming weeks.
