The sport of lacrosse basically vanished from Â鶹Éç¹ú²úback in 1994.
The old lacrosse box was demolished to make room for the Brennan Park swimming pool 17 years ago and was never replaced.
But the sport will be making its return to Â鶹Éç¹ú²úwith the first-ever Lacrosse Jamboree, which takes place in Brennan Park Arena on June 25.
"It's just something we decided to do to help bring more interest to the sport in Squamish," said event organizer Mara Williams. "I think there's a lot of interest in the sport here."
Williams pointed out that with the destruction of the old lacrosse box, players are now forced to travel to the North Shore to play the game and many still do. Several Â鶹Éç¹ú²úresidents play on the North Shore Stealth Peewee B team and many adults also play in men's and women's leagues in Vancouver.
According to Williams, the opportunity to bring the sport back to Â鶹Éç¹ú²úhas local players pumped.
"They're pretty excited," she said. "We've been trying to spread the word throughout both the Â鶹Éç¹ú²úNation and in town and everybody seems excited."
The jamboree will give anyone interested a chance to become more familiar with the sport of lacrosse. Vendors will bring along equipment for players to use, instructors will teach basic lacrosse skills and several pro lacrosse players are expected to make it out to the event. Williams also said that organizers hope to highlight some of the history of the sport in Â鶹Éç¹ú²úwith pictures and displays.
Williams added that it will be a family-friendly event, with food vendors, a mini-golf game and other fun activities to keep the kids occupied.
She also pointed out that every Monday from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. there is drop-in lacrosse at the Totem Hall. All interested are free to show up and sticks are provided by the Â鶹Éç¹ú²úNation Recreation Department. Williams recommended that those taking part bring along other protective gear such as a helmet to ensure safety.
The ultimate goal for the group is to get a lacrosse box back in town and try to build interest locally. She said it's a strong possibility after a positive response from a recent meeting with District of Â鶹Éç¹ú²ú(DOS) council.
"I was surprised at how many of the councillors had been exposed to and knew about the sport of lacrosse," she said.
Council referred the request and correspondence from the Â鶹Éç¹ú²úLacrosse Association to build a new box to staff for consideration when preparing the Recreation Master Plan.
Williams suggested that a team from Â鶹Éç¹ú²úcould join up with the North Shore Lacrosse Association but said that she would like to also create teams locally for families who don't want to travel every weekend.
The jamboree won't be the only event this summer for lacrosse fans in Squamish, as Williams said she's working on bringing an exhibition game to Brennan Park Arena sometime in July.
The Lacrosse Jamboree will take place June 25 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Brennan Park Arena. For more information on this free event, check out the lacrosse in Â鶹Éç¹ú²úFacebook page by typing "Â鶹Éç¹ú²úLacrosse" into the search bar.
