Lacrosse offers great fun, value

New league with a low first-year fee of $15

The sport of lacrosse is inching its way toward 麻豆社国产and the price to take part in a local house league in town is shockingly low.

For only $15, youngsters can hit the floor at Brennan Park. Organizer Sonya Glover was elated to hear the news from the British Columbia Lacrosse Association (BCLA).

"Any time a new league starts up, that's the BCLA's flat fee for that first year," she said. "They get help from funding and grants and it's going to make lacrosse really affordable for everyone out here. When they first told me the price, I couldn't believe it."

Things are ramping up for the sport locally as Glover said the recent spring break camps helped drum up even more interest in the game.

"We had two good weeks of solid turnouts," she said of the lacrosse camps that took place at Brennan Park. "The first week we had Kevin Sandy from the Iroquois lacrosse program in Ontario and then we had Cam Bomberry, who is a former pro, and the kids were thrilled to see him out here."

Glover said the appearance by the two lacrosse players helped create a buzz in town about the sport.

"I saw a bunch of the kids the next day at hockey practice and their parents said they kept talking about wanting to play lacrosse," she said.

While the local league aims to target players 10 and under, Glover said Sandy and Bomberry piqued the interest of several of the older local players, many of whom play in leagues in the Lower Mainland.

"When everyone heard about the pros coming, then we had a lot of the older kids coming out," she said, adding that each week saw about 24 players participate in the camps.

The next big event for lacrosse locally will be the second annual jamboree on April 22. Glover said it should include a similar format to last year with vendors, displays and the chance to try out different types of equipment.

The jamboree is completely free to the public and will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. but, unlike last year, it will be held in the Brennan Park auditorium.

Glover said that the jamboree is timed perfectly to encourage newer players to try out the sport.

"Registration in the city ends May 30 so this gives us a month to get everything organized and get the house league going," she said.

According to Glover, the house league is scheduled to take place on Mondays from 5 to 6 p.m. and will replace the Monday night sessions she's been running at Totem Hall for the past several months.
