After a one-year hiatus, Â鶹Éç¹ú²úSoccerfest made its return to local soccer fields and a number of home teams made an impact.
The two-day event saw more than 50 teams hit the pitch on both Saturday and Sunday (April 18-19). Despite success from several Â鶹Éç¹ú²úteams, the top prize in the men’s open division heads to North Vancouver after The Shockers won the title.
The Shockers won all five games they competed in, culminating in a 2-1 win over Vancity in Sunday’s final game.Â
Â鶹Éç¹ú²úFC, the club that cleaned up in the Vancouver Metro Soccer League earlier this year, placed third in the men’s open division. Â鶹Éç¹ú²úbeat local club Galileo 1-0, defeated Sechelt 2-1 and Bombastic 4-0 on Saturday. However, they fell 2-0 to Vancity in the semi-final on Sunday to erase any championship dreams. Â鶹Éç¹ú²úthen beat Corona in the shootout to capture third.
The Â鶹Éç¹ú²úBreakers had a strong run in the Ladies Open Recreational division but ultimately came up a little short in the final game.
The Breakers were dominant in round robin play, beating The Bartenders 7-3, the WR Retros 5-0 and WCFC 2-0 on Saturday. Â鶹Éç¹ú²údefeated the Coasters 4-1 on Sunday to advance to the finals but fell 3-1 to West Vancouver’s Westside FC.
North Vancouver also captured the Men’s Over 30 division, as Shaheen defeated NVFC North Van 3-1 in Sunday’s final.
Squamish’s Ellis Moving Eagles placed third in the division, posting a shootout win over Norvan, a 2-0 win over Heritage and losing in the shootout to Shaheen on Saturday.
The Eagles were blanked 1-0 by Norvan on Sunday but bounced back with a 3-2 win over Kamloops in the third place game.
Â鶹Éç¹ú²úagain came up a little short in the Women’s Over 30 Recreational division. Â鶹Éç¹ú²úUnited were strong in round robin play, beating the Muthas 6-1, Kuna 6-1 and the Blue Blacks 7-0 on Saturday. United then beat Lomajacks 5-3 and Posse 5-1 on Sunday to finish off the round robin a perfect five wins and zero losses. In the playoffs, United beat the GFC Nuggets 3-2 but fell 2-0 to Meraloma United 2-0 to place second.
Vancouver’s Bosnia took home top prize in the Men’s Over 40 division and only allowed one goal in the five games they played at the tournament. Bosnia defeated LGP 2-0 to win the division final on Sunday.
