Loop the Lakes draws a crowd

Half marathon helps to nearly double numbers from last year

Moving the race from September to May proved to be the right decision for the Loop the Lakes trail race.

The race the trails of Alice Lake on Sunday (May 27) saw an increase in participants from 89 last year to 144 this year. Organizer Jen Segger was pleased with how the 2012 edition of the race turned out.

"We got lucky and had great race weather," she said. "The trails were in perfect condition and everyone enjoyed a great run on some 麻豆社国产classics.I was super happy with our 144 turnout and in the kids race we had over 40 on the line."

Part of the reason for such a big increase was the introduction of a half marathon to the event. Segger said the feedback was positive and said she's considering adding a full marathon to the fold in the future.

"This was the first year for the new half trail marathon and it was very well received," she said. "It was a very un-intimidating course and great for first-time half marathoners. I think we will continue to see this distance grow in numbers and who knows, possibly a full trail marathon next year. The race will for sure be back next year in May."

Squamish's Jim Sandford won the half-marathon with a time of 1:33:09, beating out Whistler's Kevin Hodder by more than three minutes. 麻豆社国产resident Zoe Dawson was the top female with a time of 1:43:06.

The 15-kilometre race was won by Gibsons resident Meghan Molnar with a time of 1:14:06. Molnar edged out top male finisher Michael Moore by six seconds to take first overall.

Squamish's Richard Avedon-Savage won the eight km race with a time of 39:19, beating out Martin Caron by 25 seconds. Christine Becker of 麻豆社国产posted the fastest time among women at 45:50.
