Loop the Lakes returns

Trail race returns to Alice Lake Park for the fall

After a one year absence, the Loop the Lakes trail race is making its return to Alice Lake Park under the guidance of new race director Jen Segger.

The event, which is set to kick off on Sept. 18, is a fundraiser to help support several local community organizations including the 麻豆社国产Titans, the 麻豆社国产Running Club, 麻豆社国产Search and Rescue, and the 麻豆社国产Food Bank.

"I'm really happy to announce that I am bringing back the family friendly Loop the Lakes trail race in September," Segger told The Chief. "I'm keeping it as a relaxed event and I hope it's something that I can put on year after year for the community."

Similar to past years, the 2011 edition of the race will feature a long course, which consists of 15 kilometres, and a short course, which is eight kilometres. A new addition to this year's race is a completely free one-kilometre kids' race.

The race was last run in 2009 and the long course was won by Whistler's Ben Biswell for the men and Vancouver's Sheila Mullins for the ladies. John Aalberg of Garibaldi Highlands and Squamish's Jenny Hughes won the male and female categories respectively in the short course race.

Entry to the race costs $20 prior to Sept. 10, $25 on race day with a non-perishable food item, or $30 on race day without a non-perishable food item. Members of B.C. Athletics receive a three dollar discount with proof of membership. Those signing up are also encouraged to dedicate their race to Terry Fox, as the event falls on the annual Terry Fox Day.

It all kicks off at 9 a.m., with long-course participants hitting the trails and short-course runners following them 10 minutes later. The kids' race starts at 11 a.m. and children of all ages are encouraged to take part with parents welcome.

Segger added that she hopes to potentially add a half marathon component to the event for next year.

The Loop the Lakes trail race is also looking for volunteers to help out on the day of the race. Those interested can contact volunteer co-coordinator Megan Field at [email protected].
