Loutitt wins Calgary Marathon

Local runner excels in Calgary, looks forward to busy summer

麻豆社国产runner Jason Loutitt experienced a flashback of sorts at the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon on Sunday (May 29).

Just like he did in 2006, Loutitt won the race with a time of 2:33:01, this time beating out second-place Brendan Kenny by 54 seconds.

"It's actually a pretty slow time for me," he said. "But it sure was nice to hear the roar from the crowd again."

Loutitt, who came to 麻豆社国产in 2009, has competed in marathons all over the globe but said competing in the STORMY last August piqued his interest in ultramarathon racing.

"That was my first ultra and it really changed the way I approached running," he said. "I followed that up with the HURT 100-miler in Hawaii."

After capturing first place finishes in both the STORMY and the HURT, Loutitt eventually qualified to represent Canada after a strong finish in a 50-mile qualifying race this past January. He will represent his country at the World Trail Championships in Ireland on July 9 and then again in the Netherlands in September. He's also planning to compete in the Canadian Death Race on July 30 in Grande Cache, Alta.

Loutitt, who is sponsored by athletic giant The North Face, will continue his vigorous training, which includes regular runs from downtown 麻豆社国产to the top of The Chief as well as regular runs to the Garibaldi gates at Garibaldi Provincial Park.
