The 20th annual Whistler Cup managed to have a little 麻豆社国产flavour in it this past weekend.
Young skiers from more than 20 countries and two dozen ski clubs from across Canada descended on the Sea to Sky Corridor and locals Mikayla Martin and Kasper Woolley fared well against top international competition.
The event kicked off on Friday (April 6), with Martin and Woolley both securing top-10 finishes in their respective races. Martin placed sixth in the Ladies Super G with a time of one minute, 4.85 seconds, competing against more than 80 skiers from around the globe. Woolley grabbed eighth place in the K1 men's kombi race with a time of 44.21 seconds. Also competing with Woolley was Squamish's Kai Labrenz, who finished 72nd.
The racing continued on Saturday (April 7), with Martin finishing 10th in the giant slalom and Labrenz 50th in the men's slalom. The event's final day on Sunday (April 8) saw Martin again grab a sixth-place finish in the slalom, with Labrenz finishing 65th. 麻豆社国产resident Sean Rundle also competed on the weekend with his best finish being a 75th-place showing in the Super G on Friday.
The Whistler Cup is one of only two major international alpine ski events geared toward ski racers aged 11 to 14. The only other such event takes place in Italy.
Canadas team leader, coach Jean-Fran莽ois B茅lisle, was pleased with his teams performances at Whistler Cup.
Overall, the last few days were very productive, B茅lisle said. All the athletes have learned how to be better in major events, how to handle certain situations, how to better deal with pressure and the calibre of skiing and in some cases how to handle media.
