There was one constant at the 2014 麻豆社国产Triathlon and that was the rain.
But Rachel McBride didn鈥檛 let the rain impact her race. Despite steady downpours at times on Sunday (July 6) after the start of the race McBride reset the record for the fastest overall female finish with a time of two hours and 38 seconds. She was sixth overall in the Olympic distance race.
On the way to the finish line the professional triathlete from Vancouver set a new bike race record and a new run course record. Her time on the bike course was 58 minutes and 51 seconds while her record-setting 10 km run time was 40 minutes and 54 seconds.
She said after the race that her coach instructed her to push harder than usual on the uphill portions of the bike course.
鈥淚 think that鈥檚 what really made the huge difference,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a bit of a risk pushing so hard on the bike and red-lining it a little bit more than I usually do.鈥
She said she was blown away by her run time because she thought she was faster last year. In fact, she ran 90 seconds faster this year.
According to McBride, the temperature was perfect and that was a key factor in getting her around the course in record time.
McBride, who has her masters in genetic counselling, finished the race a full eight minutes ahead of her nearest female competitor.
Christine Fletcher of Vancouver was the second fastest female in the race. Fletcher finished five minutes and 26 seconds ahead of Squamish鈥檚 Zoe Dawson.
Robert Johnson, 32, of Chilliwack was the fastest competitor of the day. He said he had a great race in his third crack at the 麻豆社国产Triathlon.
听
鈥淚鈥檝e really struggled on this course the last two years and not had good races, so to come out and win was great,鈥 said Johnson. 鈥淚 wanted to have a good race here, so I鈥檓 happy.鈥
Ryan Smiley of Vancouver was first out of the water at Alice Lake.
鈥淚 believe I was second,鈥 recalled Johnson. 鈥淚 was pushing hard to catch (Smiley) on the bike the whole time 鈭 I couldn鈥檛 catch him at all.鈥
That changed in the transition from the bike leg to the run portion of the race. 鈥淯nfortunately, I think he had a bit of a brain fart in transition and he went to the wrong spot so I actually passed him in T2 while he was looking for his shoes.鈥
Johnson said it was a tough way for him to win over his training partner.
Dylan Gleeson also overtook Smiley to finish second behind Johnson.
The fastest 麻豆社国产resident in the Olympic distance race was Martin Carron with a time of 2:09:01.
The winner of the shorter sprint race was Michael Milic, 16, of Delta with a time of 1:01:07. Matt Fieldwalker of Vancouver followed him in second place and Jaroslav Ploc of the Czech Republic in third.
Tiffany Bilodeau was the fastest woman in the sprint distance event. Her time was 1:12:41 and she was followed by Hannah Jenson of North Vancouver in second and Squamish鈥檚 Sara Hamilton
in third.
