It might just end up as Squamish's own version of The Masters, but on a smaller stage literally.
The Whistle Punk Hollow mini-golf course and Mountain FM recently announced that they've combined forces to put on the first Mini-Putt Classic, with golfers hitting the greens today (Thursday, Aug. 22).
The event will see 16 participants battle it out for mini-golf supremacy with prizes and bragging rights on the line.
Myself and Matt [Soper] put a little thought into this and we wanted to do something later in the summer but before the kids go back to school, said Carl Brown, one-third of the Mountain FM morning show and the station's promotions manager. We thought it'd be a really fun way to close out the summer and do it right.
Brown said the sweet 16 will be split into four groups of four, with the best score from each group qualifying to play in the final foursome. Prizes include a one-year pass to Whistle Punk Hollow, gift certificates to Nesters and McDonald's and a round of golf for two at the Furry Creek Golf and Country Club. A trophy will also be awarded.
He said he hopes to make the tournament an annual event.
We're hoping to have this as a bit of a legacy project for us, Brown said. Long after our time is done with Mountain FM, we want people to continue taking part in the mini-putt classic. This is kind of me and Matt's baby.
Organizers are aiming for a 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. start and spectators are encouraged to come check out the action.
We'd like to see some sort of gallery, Brown joked. Maybe some soft applause. But a huge thank you to Whistle Punk for helping us make this deal come through. We're happy to see it happen and we're very excited for the tournament.
