麻豆社国产mountain bikers returned from the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que., with some shiny new hardware.
Quinn Moberg continued a strong 2013 season, picking up two bronze medals at the Games. Moberg picked up a bronze medal in the 800-metre sprint event on Aug. 7 and grabbed another bronze with his Team B.C. teammates in the Team Relay event on Aug. 5.
Squamish's Rhys Verner was a member of the same bronze-medal-winning Team B.C. The duo, along with Evan Guthrie from Peachland, edged out Team Nova Scotia by 13 seconds to take home the bronze.
Both Moberg and Verner also competed in the event's cross country race, placing eighth and 14th, respectively. Verner also finished 14th in the sprint event.
Squamish's Mikayla Martin was the lone local female at the Games and placed sixth in the mountain bike sprint on Aug. 7 and 14th in the cross country on Aug. 3.
Martin's and Verner's results are impressive, especially considering both were competing as underaged athletes at the event. They're both just 16 years old, whereas all the other athletes at the Games are from ages 17 to 23. Martin and Verner were invited to the event after strong results in their respective qualifying races and that led to Cycling B.C. requesting an "age and ability upgrade" to allow the pair to compete.
