Nelson powers Kermodes to victory

Tacoma native scores 37 to keep bronze hopes alive

Quest's Shedrick Nelson only scored six points at the Kermodes first game of the CCAA Nationals against Sheridan College on Thursday (March 13).

But in a 30 second stretch in the fourth quarter against Crandall University on Friday (March 14), Nelson scored six key points with back to back three's to lead Quest to a 95-83 win over the New Brunswick based Chargers.

He scored a total of 37 points, was a perfect seven of seven from beyond the arc and added nine rebounds to keep Quest's bronze medal hopes alive.

The first half was evenly played, with Quest falling down eight points early in the first only to fight back and finish the half with a four point lead. The Kermodes pulled away in the third quarter and then held off a late push back from the Chargers to hold on to the lead.

Quest had strong efforts on both ends of the court from Michael Zayas-Duran and Mohammed Dadfar. Zayas-Duran scored 10 points, grabbed four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Dadfar contributed with 12 points, six rebounds and three blocks. He also was given the tough task of guarding Chargers big man Osman Barrie for most of the night and while Barrie scored 20 points, it took him 21 shots to get there.

The Kermodes shot an impressive 55 per cent from the field and had solid ball movement with guard Cartiea French-Toney dishing eight assists.

The win means Quest will now take on the Vanier Cheetahs on Saturday (March 15) at 10 a.m. If the Kermodes win that game they will advance to the bronze medal game on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

For the Quest women's team it was another disappointing loss in Montreal as the team lost 90-74 to the Augustana Vikings on Friday. Quest guard Andrea Eidsvik was the Kermodes top scorer with 15 points and was recognized as the player of the game.

The loss means Quest will now battle the Champlain Cavaliers in the seventh place game on Saturday. Tip-off for that game is 2 p.m.
