Not even the return of the Howe Sound cheer squad could save the Howe Sound Sounders football club from the Moscrop Panthers.
It turned out to be an afternoon to forget for the Sounders as the undefeated Moscrop Panthers came to town on Saturday (Sept. 28) and dismantled the Sounders, beating them 38-0.
"There are no excuses for what happened on Saturday," said Sounders coach Jim Errington. "They were the better team and even though they are undefeated, they are not unbeatable."
It was a rough day on the field and the sidelines for the Sounders, as Errington said the team now has seven players that are nursing injuries.
Moscrop built a 16-0 lead at halftime and added insult to injury in the second half with a dominant performance. Sounders quarterback Scott Messier was out of action with a concussion and Howe Sound's offence failed to generate yardage.
Howe Sound completed one pass and totalled -1 passing yards on the afternoon. The team was slightly better on the ground, picking up 38 yards on 29 attempts.
Cam Dare led the way offensively with 15 yards rushing but the offence turned the ball over twice in the wet conditions.
Defensively it was also a trying game for the Sounders. Howe Sound gave up 251 yards of total offence to the Panthers, with Moscrop having a balanced attack of 140 yards rushing and 111 yards passing.
Jonathan Hamill led the way with five tackles for Howe Sound and Adam Stangowitz picked up the Sounders' lone quarterback sack.
Howe Sound's record fell to two wins and two losses on the season. The Sounders will next hit the road on Saturday (Oct. 5) when they take on the Timberline Wolves in Campbell River.
The next home game for Howe Sound will be on Oct. 12 when the Earl Marriott Mariners come to Squamish.
