Payak cancelled for 2015

Warm weather, lack of terrain forces organizers to cancel

Mother Nature has put an end to the 2015 edition of the Sigge鈥檚 Payak cross-country ski event.

Event organizers made the decision to cancel the event on Monday, Feb. 23 due to the lack of snow and available quality terrain for the race.

鈥淎lthough there is some snow and skiing ongoing at the venue, we cannot hold a quality event on the limited terrain available,鈥 stated event chair Dirk Rohde in a press release.

The main race was scheduled for Feb. 28, with the kids and youth event on March 1. It would have been the fifth anniversary of the race this year.

The organizing committee opted not to reschedule the event for later in March, due to more expected warm weather in the coming weeks.

鈥淚t鈥檚 very disappointing to have to cancel, and we waited as long as we could to make the decision,鈥 Rohde added. 鈥淚t鈥檚 very unusual for the Callaghan Valley to not have snow at this time of year and we believe this is an anomaly.鈥

The Sigge鈥檚 Payak had more than 430 registrations, which Rohde considered a good signup given the low snow season prior to Feb. 1.
