Vehicle fire
Traffic became backed up when a car caught fire due to a mechanical issue while it was travelling southbound on Highway 99 near Porteau Cove on Sunday, May 28. Fire service members and an RCMP member responded to deal with the vehicle and traffic issues. Fortunately, the fire was neither explosive nor severe, and no one was injured.
Capsized canoe
Three people capsized in their canoe in the Cheekye River on Â鶹Éç¹ú²úValley Road on Sunday, May 28, police said. Fortunately, all three boaters were experienced, wore personal floatation devices/lifejackets, and had practiced capsize drills. As a result, all boaters made it safely to shore and no injuries occurred. Â鶹Éç¹ú²úRCMP remind recreational boaters to wear lifejackets and be familiar with capsizing, especially when accessing fast-moving water such as the Cheekye River.
Don’t shoot and drink
Â鶹Éç¹ú²úRCMP received a report of a male firing a rifle off of Â鶹Éç¹ú²úValley Forest Service Road while he was also consuming alcohol on Sunday, May 28. Unfortunately, due to cell service gaps in the area, this report was not received until two hours after the incident. While firearm discharge in the area where this incident was reported is legal, consuming liquor while shooting can be very dangerous and would, at minimum, constitute a provincial liquor offence and could potentially result in criminal charges if the shooter was intoxicated. Â鶹Éç¹ú²úRCMP remind the public to not consume liquor while shooting firearms.
Illegal camping
Two people were caught illegal camping in Rose Park near the Â鶹Éç¹ú²úAdventure Centre on Wednesday, May 24, Â鶹Éç¹ú²úRCMP said. Two campers were advised of the legal campgrounds in the area and were cooperative about finding another area to sleep. Â鶹Éç¹ú²úRCMP is often called to illegal camping complaints as the weather becomes warmer each year. Officers would like to remind the public there is no permitted camping overnight in municipal parks.
Licence plate stolen
A licence plate was stolen from a white Mitsubishi Outlander on Thursday, May 25 while it was parked at the Sea to Sky Gondola parking lot between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Â
Boat trailer damaged
Â鶹Éç¹ú²úRCMP received a report that between May 19 and 23 an unknown person accessed a hydraulic trailer control at a marine/boat sales business on Queens Way and used the control set to damage the trailer.
Smashed window
On May 25, Â鶹Éç¹ú²úRCMP received a report of a smashed window of a grey Pontiac Vibe on Westway Avenue. The damage is believed to have occurred on May 23 and it has not been determined whether it was an attempted theft or mischief.
