Prospects Game coming to Squamish

PIJHL annual showcase of young players set for Jan. 31

麻豆社国产will play host to some of the most talented young hockey players in the province when the Pacific International Junior Hockey League (PIJHL) brings its annual Prospects Game to the Brennan Park Arena on Jan. 31.

The game will feature the best young players born in 1993 and 1994 from Squamish, North Delta, Delta, Grandview and Richmond suit up for the Tom Shaw Conference team while the Harold Brittain team will be made up of players from Abbotsford, Ridge Meadows, Aldergrove, Mission and Port Moody.

"It's an opportunity to provide exposure for the younger players in our league," said PIJHL president George Richards. "It's a showcase for them to display their abilities and let people see how much talent we have in our great league."

The 麻豆社国产Wolf Pack expects to have some significant representation in the game. The Pack boasts one of the youngest rosters in the PIJHL and head coach Matt Samson hopes to see several members of the team playing for the Tom Shaw conference.

"We'd really like to see Jaret Babych, Matt Bonin and Valik Chichkin in the game," Samson said. "It's a game to let the young kids show what they've got. There will probably be a number of scouts in the stands and it should be a pretty fun game to watch for the fans."

Samson said he'd like as many Wolf Pack players as possible to dress for the game, adding that forwards Cole Briggs and Jamie Creamore are two other players he thinks could be named to the team.

Full details of the team's rosters were not available by press time, but the full rosters of both teams participating in the game are expected to released in the coming days.

Other players expected to be named to the team include the Delta Ice Hawks' Aaron Merrick, who leads the PIJHL in rookie scoring with 13 goals and 37 points in 36 games. Bradley Parker of the Abbotsford Pilots leads the Harold Brittain Conference in scoring and is expected to play a big role on that team. Ryan Cuthbert of the Ice Hawks, who leads the PIJHL in rookie defenceman scoring, is expected to be among the blueliners participating in the game. In goal, the Richmond Sockeyes' rookie goaltending duo of Aaron Oakley and Devin Nijjer should see some time between the pipes. The tandem is first and second in the league, respectively, in goals-against average and should be stopping the puck for the Tom Shaw team.

The coaches for the game will be Richmond's Judd Lampert and Port Moody's Bayne Koen, who gained the honour for being second in their respective conferences at the midway point of the season.

The PIJHL Prospects Game is scheduled to take place on Jan. 31 with the puck set to drop at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.
