The 2013-’14 season could be recognized as the year that finally put the Quest Kermodes athletic program on the map. The school recognized its athletes’ achievements at the annual awards dinner on Sunday (April 6).
The Quest women’s basketball team won the school’s first provincial championship in March, the men’s basketball team placed fifth in the country and hosted the national tournament and the women’s soccer team picked up a silver medal at the provincials.
Head coach Dany Charlery handed out the awards for his women’s basketball team to Cynthia Lau for leadership, Shayna Cameron for the coaches award and Katrin Sandbichler for the player of the year.
Sandbichler was also awarded the female athlete of the year award after a season that saw her win the Pacwest tournament MVP award and be named a second-team regular season all-star. Lau was also named the outstanding academic female athlete of the year and achieved a grade point average of 3.80 in her final year at Quest.
The Quest men’s basketball team enjoyed its best season ever with a record of 16 wins and five losses and hosted one of the biggest basketball events in the country in March. Head coach Sean Shook handed out his awards to Denzel Laguerta for leadership, Dylan Kular for the coaches award and Jose Colorado for the player of the year.
Colorado also was named male athlete of the year and shared the outstanding academic male athlete of the year award with Benjamin Schager from the men’s soccer team. Colorado achieved a 3.91 GPA in his final year at Quest and maintained a grade-point average of 3.55 throughout his four years at
the school.
The Quest women’s soccer team medalled at the Pacwest provincials for the second straight year and took home the silver after a 1-0 loss to Thompson Rivers in the Pacwest final back in October. The team honoured goalkeeper Tiana Gilchrist with the coaches’ award, Gellie Raguin-Licas with the leadership award and Briana Powrie with the player of the year.
For the Quest men’s soccer team, it was a disappointing winless season but they honoured the past and looked to the future by awarding Schager the leadership award, graduating senior Charles Impey received the coaches’ award and rookie Zachary Roberts-Winter was named the player of
the year.Â
