The Pacwest women's soccer gold medal game in Nanaimo on Sunday (Oct. 27) featured almost everything chances on both ends, stellar goal keeping and even a wind delay.
The only thing missing was a goal for the Quest Kermodes.
The TRU Wolfpack managed to keep the Kermodes off the scoreboard and hang on for the 1-0 win despite heavy offensive pressure from Quest in the second half.
TRU forward Katie Sparrow scored the game's only goal in the 38th minute to clinch the Wolfpack's third straight Pacwest gold medal.
It's a cruel game The girls played their hearts out. Controlled the second half, just could not score, tweeted Quest coach Paul Pedersen after the final whistle.
The Kermodes picked up the silver medal with the loss, the second medal for the women's soccer program and the school's third medal overall. The silver medal is the highest ever finish by a Quest team in school history.
Quest reached the gold medal game after a 3-1 win over the UBC-O Heat on Saturday (Oct. 26). Kermodes super rookie Paige Ayers scored a pair of goals in the win, with Maren Tarleton adding a single.
The team's strong play didn't go unnoticed as goal keeper Tianna Gilchrist and defender Becky Schile were named as the top performers at the tournament for their respective positions.
2013 will be the final time that TRU will be the thorn in Quest's side as the Kamloops based team will move to the CIS in 2014. Sunday marked the final game for Kermodes veterans Gilchrist, Tarleton and Gellie Raguin-Licas. The trio will be graduating this spring and leave the school with silver and bronze (2012) medals on their resume.
In other Quest soccer news, Tarleton and Ayers were both named Pacwest first team all-stars based on their strong play in the regular season. Gilchrist and midfielder Brianna Powrie were selected to the second team. Quest men's team member Taylor Cooper also was recognized, as he was named to the men's second team.
