The 2012-'13 athletic season marked a huge leap forward in credibility for the Quest University Kermodes basketball and soccer teams.
The women's soccer team and men's basketball team both won provincial bronze, three of the four teams made the playoffs and the school announced that the National Men's Basketball Championships will be coming to the Kermode Kave next spring.
But Friday (March 22) was a time to reflect as the school hosted its annual athletic banquet to honour the season's top athletes and accomplishments.
It was a sweep for the basketball teams in the male and female athlete of the year, as Jose Colorado and Delainee Behrns took home the top honours.
Colorado had a breakout season for the men's team and was regularly featured in the top 10 in the country for scoring. The Kitchener, Ont., native averaged 19.2 points per game (ppg) and was a key factor in the turnaround of the men's team.
Behrns, a graduating senior on the women's team, has been the Kermodes point guard and leader on the floor for a number of years and capped it off with a great final season. She ranked fourth in the Pacwest with 3.2 assists per game and seventh in scoring with 11.4 ppg.
Behrns also was named the player of the year for the women's basketball team, with Soraya Jung capturing the leadership award and Hilary Young winning the coaches' award.
Like Behrns, Colorado also captured the player of the year award for the men's basketball team, with departing seniors Jesse Norris and Brodan Thiel winning the leadership and coaches awards respectively.
It was an excellent year for the women's soccer program, as the team picked up the school's first-ever medal back in October. Midfielder Brianna Powrie was named player of the year. Team captain Jessica Freeman won the leadership award, with midfielder Ami Massey taking home the coaches' award.
The men's soccer team had a mostly forgettable season, failing to win a game but there's nowhere for the club to go but up. Defender Benjamin Schager was named player of the year, with goalie Evan Cross winning the leadership award and defender James McKinley capturing the coaches' award.
