Quest men stumble into playoffs

Men鈥檚 basketball team on losing streak entering post-season

The Quest Kermodes men鈥檚 basketball team continued its stumble into the playoffs, recording losses at home on Friday (Feb. 27) and Saturday (Feb. 28) to close out the Pacwest regular season.

Friday鈥檚 game saw the Camosun Chargers jump out to a 29-11 lead after the first quarter but the Kermodes fought back to get the game close in the second half. Camosun left town with a 71-68 win and shot an impressive 45 per cent from the field.

Dallas Searles led the Kermodes with 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Dylan Kular (14 points) and Michael Powell (11 points) were the only other Quest players in double digits. Quest shot 33 per cent from the field for the game.

It didn鈥檛 get much better for Quest on Saturday, as the top ranked VIU Mariners led the entire game and won 83-63.

The Mariners outrebounded Quest 45-33 and the Kermodes committed 28 turnovers in the loss. Kular had a team high 19 points, while Noah DeRappard-Yuswack had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Michael Zayas-Duran added 15 points and seven rebounds.

Saturday was the final game in the Kermode Kave for graduating seniors Kular, Powell, Justin Tryon, Daniel Hoffman and injured forward Connor Heinrichs.

The pair of losses leaves Quest鈥檚 record at 14 wins and seven losses on the season, and they finished third in the Pacwest. However, Quest has lost its last four games and enter the playoffs on a slide.

Quest opens the Pacwest provincials in Abbotsford on Thursday (March 5), when they take on the Capilano Blues. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.

The Kermodes and Blues played three teams in the regular season, with Quest winning all the encounters.
