Quest women fall to VIU, Camosun

Kermode men split pair of games on the road

Travelling away from the Kermode Kave proved to be a recipe for disappointment for the Quest Kermodes women's basketball team.

Quest entered Week 3 of Pacwest action with a record of 3-0 but a trip to Vancouver Island for games against the VIU Mariners on Friday (Nov. 15) and the Camosun Chargers on Saturday (Nov. 16) saw the team drop two straight.

The Kermodes had a rough start, trailing by as many as 20 points but battled back only to come up short 69-67 to the unbeaten Mariners. Katrin Sandbichler, Shayna Cameron and Andrea Eidsvik all had 14 points, with Sandbichler leading the way with 12 rebounds.

Quest had another heartbreaking loss against the Chargers, allowing a three-pointer to take the game to overtime and eventually falling 75-68 to Camosun.

The game featured another poor start by Quest, with the Kermodes falling 22 points behind at one point and playing catch-up for most of the game. Aimee Johnston led the way with 21 points, with Sandbichler and Miriam Baumann grabbing 10 rebounds apiece.

"I'm not really sure why we're starting off games so slowly," Cameron said. "We need to have a sense of urgency and intensity from the tip."

The women's team dropped to 3-2 on the season and sits in third place.

The trip was more positive for the men's team, who managed a bounce-back 83-65 win at Camosun on Saturday after a 76-65 loss to VIU on Friday.

Friday's game saw Quest play a close three quarters against the top team in the Pacwest but the Mariners held the Kermodes to three-for-16 shooting in the final quarter. Quest was led by Pacwest Player of the Week Cartiea French-Toney with 21 points, while Shedrick Nelson contributed with 18 points and seven rebounds.

It was a different story on Saturday, as the Kermodes shot 52.5 per cent from the field and held the Chargers to 35.6 per cent shooting.

Nelson led the way with 22 points and seven rebounds, with French-Toney having a nice line of 16 points, six rebounds and six assists. Rookie Paul Getz had his most productive game as a Kermode with 14 points and four rebounds.

Quest's record moved to 3-2 after the trip to Vancouver Island and they are tied for third place.

The teams will travel south to battle rival Capilano on Thursday (Nov. 21). The women tip off at 6 p.m. and the men hit the court at 8 p.m.
