Quest women: Stayin’ alive in Pacwest playoffs

Kermodes women team win two straight, men suffer two losses

None of the members of the Quest University Kermodes women’s soccer team were born when the Bee Gees most popular song was released in 1977.

But the team is truly ‘Stayin Alive’ after back-to-back wins in must win games on Saturday (Oct. 11) and Sunday (Oct. 12).

Facing playoff elimination with a loss, Quest defeated the Capilano Blues 3-1 in North Vancouver on Saturday and then downed the Douglas College Royals 1-0 in Â鶹Éç¹ú²úon Sunday to keep the team’s playoff hopes alive.

Saturday saw the Kermodes fall behind 1-0 to Capilano early, only to score three unanswered goals. Quest goal scorers were: Daniella Smith, Sabrina DeSoto and Brianna Powrie.  The three goals is the highest offensive output in one game for the women’s team in 2014.

Quest continued its strong play on Sunday, with midfielder Emma Berwick scoring early in the second half to secure the win. The Kermodes continued pressing on offense but failed to add to the lead in the second half. Goalkeeper Caitlyn Spooner was solid at the other end to pick up the shutout.

The pair of wins ensures that Quest has something to play for next weekend and still has a chance to catch the fourth place Kwantlen Eagles to clinch a berth in the Pacwest Provincials.

Quest travels to Surrey to take on the Eagles on Saturday (Oct. 18) in a game they must win in order to stay alive in the playoff hunt. A loss or tie to the Eagles means that Kwantlen snags the last playoff spot. The women’s team must also defeat the Langara Falcons in Â鶹Éç¹ú²úon Sunday (Oct. 19) and hope that the first place VIU Mariners defeat the Eagles in Nanaimo to qualify for the playoffs.

The men’s team is also still mathematically alive heading into the final weekend of the season but they didn’t do themselves any favours with a 4-1 loss to Capilano on Saturday and a 3-1 loss to Douglas on Sunday.

Quest fell behind 4-0 to Capilano, adding a goal in the second half to blank the shutout on Saturday in North Vancouver. Sunday’s game in Â鶹Éç¹ú²úsaw the Royals grab a 2-0 lead early but Quest rode the momentum of a JB McEown goal and cut the lead by one after one half of play. Douglas added another in the second half to pick up the 3-1 win.

The pair of losses puts the men’s team on the outside of the playoff picture but they can still qualify by winning the two final games of the regular season and hoping for Capilano and Langara to fail to win either of their last two games. Capilano plays Langara on Saturday in a game that must end in a tie if Quest wants to qualify for the playoffs. Quest takes on Kwantlen on Saturday in a game they must win or they are eliminated. The men’s team then battles Langara at home on Sunday in a game they also must win if they want to move on.

The women kick off at noon on Sunday, with the men hitting the pitch at 2 p.m. Sunday marks the end of the regular season for the Pacwest, with the Provincials occurring on Oct. 25 and 26 at Quest University.
