Quest women still unbeaten

Women sweep road schedule, men split games

The undefeated streak has now extended to 14 games for the Quest Kermodes women鈥檚 basketball team.

The top-ranked team in the country continued its perfect season with a 77-42 win over the Langara Falcons on Friday (Jan. 30) and a 74-58 victory over the Douglas Royals on Saturday.

Quest opened up a 15-2 lead in the first quarter to cruise to the win against Langara and held the Falcons to under 20 per cent shooting. The Kermodes also outrebounded Langara 63-45.

Miriam Baumann led the way with 18 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks and guard Abbey Piazza added 17 points and two steals. Katrin Sandbichler grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds in the win.

The Kermodes also started out strong against the Royals on Saturday, riding a 19-8 lead after the first quarter to victory. Quest shot 51.5 per cent from the field and grabbed nine more rebounds than Douglas.

Shayna Cameron scored 21 points and added seven assists, three rebounds and two steals in the win. Andrea Eidsvik added 18 points, three rebounds and three assists, while Baumann had 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

The pair of wins improves the women鈥檚 record to 14 wins and no losses and they have a three-game lead on second-place VIU in the Pacwest.

The road trip was tougher for the men, who lost 92-81 to Langara on Friday but bounced back with a 78-77 win against Douglas on Saturday.

Quest trailed the entire game against the Falcons. Langara shot 10 per cent better than the Kermodes.

They also out-rebounded Quest by 14 and had 47 points from the bench. Paul Getz (18 points and six rebounds) and Dallas Searles (17 points and six rebounds) were Quest鈥檚 top statistical leaders. Other Kermodes in double digits for scoring were Theo VandenEkart and Denzel Laguerta.

The Kermodes trailed by eight after the first half against Douglas on Saturday but had a strong third quarter to seal the win. Quest shot 50 per cent and Searles had a team-high 23 points to go along with seven rebounds, seven assists and two steals.

Dylan Kular also had a strong game with 15 points and shooting five of six from the three-point line.

The weekend puts Quest鈥檚 record at 11 wins and three losses; the team sits in third place in the Pacwest.

Both teams return to the Kermode Kave at Quest University for the first time since November on Thursday (Feb. 5), when the CBC Bearcats come to town. They return to the court on Saturday (Feb. 7) to take on the Kwantlen Eagles. Women鈥檚 games tip off at 6 p.m. and men鈥檚 games get underway at 8 p.m. on both days.
