Race for the ladies

Hot on Your Heels event sets out to bring women together

This one's for the ladies.

SORCA is set to kick off Hot On Your Heels, a women's-only bike race, on Aug. 4. Profits from the enduro-style race will be donated to Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds, a mentoring program that encourages physical activity, healthy eating and the development of a positive self-image among young girls.

The course will see riders climb up the Ring Creek Forest Service Road to the top of Angry Midget and then head toward the bottom of Half Nelson, crossing over into Fool's Gold. An uphill section on STP follows, with riders heading onto Hoods in the Woods and through Poop Alley before finishing the race after Carpenter Son's Bridge.

Racers will be timed overall but there are also two timed stages in between. The first one will be the descent from the top of Angry Midget to the bottom, with the second one taking place on Hoods in the Woods.

One unique aspect of the event is that males only have the opportunity to volunteer. According to the SORCA website, the group will not be held responsible for any sexual harassment directed towards the volunteers throughout the day - including the after party.

The aforementioned after party will take place at the Living Room at 6 p.m. and is open to all riders and volunteers. There will be dinner, music, dancing and a raffle draw to help support Go Girls.

Registration for the event is $50 for SORCA members, with non-members having to purchase one-day insurance for $20. Riders are asked to check in at the bottom of Half Nelson starting at 9 a.m., with the race hitting the trails at 10 a.m.

Any men interested in volunteering can do so by emailing [email protected].
