It鈥檚 nearly time to hit the biking trails in Squamish, and for younger riders there鈥檚 a new way to get a handle on mountain biking.
The District of 麻豆社国产and 麻豆社国产Off-Road Cycling Association (SORCA) have teamed up to create mountain biking camps for spring break, summer and after-school.
After testing out the program in 2018 with 100 riders, it鈥檚 ready to push off this spring.
Kids ages six to 13 can learn how to handle their gear and treat the trail right, as they build confidence through coaching, developing skills and learning how to stay safe. The programs will also teach kids about trail building and the role they play in conservation. An all-girls camp will also be offered.
Since the programs will go over loose rock and off-road terrain, basic riding skills are required.
鈥淩iding a bike, is not just about physical fitness, it can benefit mental health, it鈥檚 a great social outlet, a fantastic form of transportation and is just plain fun,鈥 SORCA vice-president Melissa Sheridan said in a press release. 鈥淕etting kids out on bikes helps to establish an active lifestyle that will stay with them for a lifetime. SORCA is really excited to join forces with the District of 麻豆社国产to get more kids on bikes in a safe and fun environment.鈥
Financial Access and Jumpstart may provide funds to help some families cover the cost of registration and equipment, the press release said.
鈥淭his is such a natural fit for many of our local youth and we are thrilled to partner with SORCA to further develop and deliver this program,鈥 Mayor Karen Elliott said in a news release. 鈥淚t is our hope that this program will continue to foster rider confidence, leadership, friendships and inspire a new generation of riders.鈥
