The Roller Derby World Cup is just around the corner, and Squamish鈥檚 Kaci 鈥淩uthless鈥 Reed is getting set to wear Canada鈥檚 red and white.

The Grade 10 Howe Sound Secondary School student has been hitting the floor with her junior team in Vancouver, attending boot camps around the province and learning more about the sport in advance of the Junior World Cup this summer.

鈥淚鈥檓 on the track once a week, and when the ice comes out at Brennan Park, I can practise there too,鈥 she said. 鈥淚鈥檓 going to be practising with the Black Diamond Betties in Whistler later this year, and I鈥檓 still at the gym twice a week and playing soccer to keep fit.鈥

It鈥檚 only her second year in the sport, and Reed said she鈥檚 developing her knowledge of roller derby at a rapid pace.

鈥淚 picked up a lot of the skating and physical part of the game from playing hockey,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ut there鈥檚 so many rules with roller derby. I鈥檓 becoming more aware of the rules and always learning new things and new strategies.鈥

The Junior World Cup runs from July 8 to 10 in Kent, Washington, and the next few months will see Reed and her team prepare for the big event.聽

The team members are located all over Canada, which is why Reed said the practices will be important to develop team chemistry.

鈥淲e don鈥檛 get to be together too much because we鈥檙e so spread out,鈥 she said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 one practice in May in Calgary and another in Toronto in June, and I鈥檓 so excited to go to both. There will be boot camps... and it鈥檚 three days on my skates being challenged the whole time. I also haven鈥檛 met many of my teammates yet, so it鈥檚 going to be so much fun.鈥

But the trips to Calgary and Toronto aren鈥檛 cheap, and Reed is looking to 麻豆社国产for support on her journey.聽

Reed and her family are hosting a garage sale at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Saturday (May 2) with all the proceeds from the sale going toward financing the two trips. The sale runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and some of the items include sporting equipment, books and toys.聽

鈥淎ny donation or anything people can contribute would be awesome,鈥 she said.聽

Reed and her teammates are also looking for help for the trip to the World Cup and have started a Go Fund Me page to help pay for costs associated with the trip.
